During the late 1970's and early 1980's Darlene owned and drove a 1970 914-6e Porsche. She belonged to the Porsche Club of America and participated in virtually every race she could afford and get time off to attend. During her racing days she drove at many recognizable tracks, including Riverside, Willow Springs, Ontario, Holtville, Las Vegas, Carlsbad, Leguna Seca and many pylon time trials at the San Diego Stadium parking lot.

In the early 1980's she placed first in her class in the southern California, Nevada and Arizona division. On many occasions while Darlene was racing her 914-6e, she took her son Jess with her and allowed him to race the car.

During hers and Roy's relationship she took him racing with her on several occasions, including Riverside and Holtville. However, before their marriage in 1987 she stopped racing but kept the car.
